3 Reasons Why You May Need an Orthodontist

Everyone knows why dentists are essential for oral health checkups and cleanings, but for some reason, when most people think of orthodontists, they think of just a cosmetic procedure to get your teeth straight. However, orthodontic care is about more than aesthetics (although that’s certainly part of it). Here are 3 Reasons why you should schedule yourself and your child to see an orthodontist.

One: It is essential that all children see an orthodontist between the ages of 6 years old and 10 years old because this age range is when most children begin to lose their baby teeth, which are then replaced by adult teeth. However, several things could go wrong during the process. A tooth may become impacted, an adult tooth could come in in front of, or behind, a baby tooth and a child may develop general crowding – just to name a few. Many of these challenges can be avoided and overcome with early intervention. Early evaluation is the first step in providing a healthy, confident smile.

Two: Having crooked teeth can create other dental problems that you may not be aware of. For example, having crowded teeth can make it hard to clean between tight spaces, which could then lead to tooth decay and cavities. Having misaligned teeth can cause your bite to create pressure points inside your mouth. As you get older, these pressure points can cause your teeth to break. Ouch! Additionally, did you know there is also strong evidence to suggest that your bite may have an impact on your airway and even your speech? Needless to say, orthodontic treatment is about more than looks.

Three: While we listed two non-cosmetic reasons for seeing an orthodontist, there’s no denying that having a straighter smile can lead to greater confidence. People who finish orthodontic treatment often describe how they smile and laugh more in general and feel more comfortable around other people. Undoubtedly, having the perfect smile can make one want to show it off more!

Between the possibilities of preventing dental problems down the road, taking care of your adult teeth once they’ve settled, and creating a healthy, confident smile, the question isn’t so much, “Why should I see an orthodontist?” but instead, “Why wouldn’t you come in for an orthodontic evaluation?”.
